Shistosoma mansoni

Ø  ID- has the little hook or pointer on just one side

Ø  causes Shistomiasis

Schistosoma japonicum

Ø  ID- small round

Schistosoma haematobium

Ø  ID- football shaped with a point at one end

  • TRANSMISSION: Cercaria in H2O or through penetration of skin
  • Human species: cause slight local reaction (petechiae)
  • Non-human species cause “swimmer’s itch,” papules, macules, and itching
  • Worms can migrate and cause allergic symptoms: (induces eosinophilia)
  • Damage to tissue is done by eggs
  • can have cirrhosis of the liver portal hypertension
  • Eggs are the BIG problem

Ø  DIAGNOSIS: ID of eggs in urine, feces, or rectal biopsy

Ø  TREATMENT for all: Praziquantel
