Ø ID- has the little hook or pointer on just one side
Ø causes Shistomiasis
Schistosoma japonicum
Ø ID- small round
Schistosoma haematobium
Ø ID- football shaped with a point at one end
- TRANSMISSION: Cercaria in H2O or through penetration of skin
- Human species: cause slight local reaction (petechiae)
- Non-human species cause “swimmer’s itch,” papules, macules, and itching
- Worms can migrate and cause allergic symptoms: (induces eosinophilia)
- Damage to tissue is done by eggs
- can have cirrhosis of the liver portal hypertension
- Eggs are the BIG problem
Ø DIAGNOSIS: ID of eggs in urine, feces, or rectal biopsy
Ø TREATMENT for all: Praziquantel
